Why a company plan?

There are several reasons why it can be attractive to conclude your global health insurance in the name of your business. The most important ones:

This way you can easily cover your entire team and your family in just one contract.
In many circumstances a company contract allows you to deduct the health insurance premiums as business expenses.
Company rates are usually more economic than individual plans.

How does the contract conclusion work?

The health insurance contract is concluded in three steps:

First you sign the contract between the insurance provider and your company.
Then you apply for the coverage of each individual within this contract.
The underwriters will look into the medical history of each individual and grant coverage whether right away or with exclusions or a risk loading for pre-existing conditions. In some cases coverage can be denied.

You will have an assigned contact person through all steps.

How is the insurance handled in my accounting?

Health insurance as an agreed part of an employee’s compensation is a business expense. If you grant coverage to individuals that are not actively contributing to the value creation in your business (e.g. family members) then you need to pay fringe benefits tax (20 percent) on these expenses. To avoid this taxation you can easily reimburse the amount to your company.

We will provide you with a checklist for your accountant.

How does it work if I need to see a doctor?

There are two different ways:

In case of an emergency when you need to go to the hospital there is a direct arrangement between the insurance and the hospital. The insurance will pay the hospital bills directly.
If you need to see a general practitioner or a specialist you just book an appointment whether for a telemedicine consultation (video call) or a local clinic through the Air Doctor app. The doctors visit gets paid directly through the app by the insurance.

For all other cases you can still just file a claim for reimbursement with the receipt of any medical out of pocket expense.

How do I pay the premiums?

For now the payment method available is SEPA bank transfer on a monthly basis. In the near future card payments will be supported as well as less frequent payments (quarterly, semi-annually, annually).

Who are a the people behind this?

To provide tailored global health insurance for the e-Residents community is a passion project of Christoph Huebner, e-Resident himself since 2017 and insurance broker specialized in health insurance. COVRD.EE is one step towards his vision of a universal global healthcare for e-Residents (see his guest article in the e-Residency blog).

For COVRD.EE they brought the best players together: A German insurance company (Barmenia) and an experienced underwriter in travel insurance (Dr. Walter).

The monthly premium results from the selected benefit level (Plus or Best), the insured region (1= excluding Canada and USA or 2= including Canada and USA) and the age group, which results from the age of the insured person. The contribution of the respective age group
is valid until the end of the month in which the maximum age of this age group was reached. From the following month onwards, the premium of the next respective age group shall apply.
